The small town in the heart of the Swiss Plateau

Langenthal constitutes the centre of the Bernese Oberaargau. The versatile and conveniently located town offers an extraordinary mix of culture, tradition and commerce. Steeped in history, the town of Langenthal was awarded the Wakker Prize in 2019 by the Swiss Heritage Society for the careful handling of its architectural tradition. In the town centre – which is partly a vehicle-free zone – a diverse array of local businesses and appealing restaurants invite you to stroll along and indulge. A particularly characteristic feature of the townscape is its high pavements, which were laid back in the day to protect against the floods from the "Langeten" stream. The Langenthaler Fasnacht (Langenthal Carnival) is famed beyond the borders of the canton, and many homesick Langenthalers return to their native town for it. In summer, the town hosts a varied programme of summer cinema as well as music and street food festivals.

Oberaargau

Oberaargau

Close to nature and lively

The Oberaargau, a varied landscape with green forests and gentle hills, stretches from the Napf region to the Jura mountains. In its historic localities such as Wiedlisbach or our small town of Langenthal, you will learn more about the histories of the old buildings. A lively cultural life, scenic hiking and biking routes, secluded spots on the lake and unique places of natural beauty are waiting to be discovered.

Emmental

Emmental

"Ämmitau" – the hilly paradise

The unique Emmental – Emmen valley – located northeast of the city of Bern, is known for its unmistakable hills covered with lush greenery. Cycling routes meander through its meadows, and the Grand Tour of Switzerland makes a stop here near the "Lueg" viewing point. The Emmental Show Dairy and the Kambly Experience are the culinary attractions of the region. The multi-faceted Emmental, with its local museum, a bell foundry and the oldest alpine horn factory in Switzerland, also has a lot to offer for culture fans. Even the Swiss writer Jeremias Gotthelf, who wrote well-known books such as Ueli der Knecht (Ueli the Servant) and Ueli der Pächte (Ueli the Tenant) in the deep Emmental, was inspired by this unique landscape and its people.
